The following is from a speech given by CiCi, a 2001 counselor in training, at a final campfire ceremony.
"At Camp Newaygo, everyone has a chance to be touched by nature. We live in the woods among the frogs, chipmunks, and daddy long-legs. Upon entering Camp Newaygo, we are invited to watch the sun set over Lake Pickerel. Overnights to Cliff House, The Woods, Wakonda, The Chalet, Muskegon State Park, Tent City and The Sleeping Bear Dunes have brought us all a little closer to nature. But living among the wildlife is only the beginning of the journey to serenity. Each person must learn to appreciate the rustling of the leaves, the waves near the shore, the occasional rainstorm, and getting dirty—especially getting dirty!
Camp Newaygo simply offers an invitation to expand one’s mind and learn to live with simple abundance. Through listening to nature, we can all learn to be a little less selfish, a little more patient, a little more caring, and hopefully, much happier. I know that living in the woods throughout my childhood summers has pushed me to be satisfied with the natural world. Not a day goes by when Mother Nature fails to surprise, inspire, or comfort me. I hope each and every person sitting here tonight can open their hearts to such abundant, priceless gifts. Enjoy your time with nature and try not to forget the magic Camp Newaygo offers."
